Legacy Community Health was honored to participate in the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Business Expo and Luncheon last Friday, hosted by president and CEO, Dr. Laura Murillo. As proud supporters of the Chamber, we recognize the role minority-owned businesses play in shaping Houston’s legacy. With 64% of our patient population being Hispanic/Latino, Legacy takes great pride in offering our health care services, especially since over half of our employees are from the Hispanic/Latino community, reflecting the communities we serve. By providing equal access to healthcare, we actively contribute to the growth and diversity of our city. Thank you for having us at this event and for the opportunity to #drivehealthychange within the Hispanic/Latino community!#HHCCLuncheon

Civic engagement is not just a duty; it's a powerful tool for creating healthier communities. As we observe National Public Health Week (#NPHW), Flourish & Thrive Labs encourages you to reflect on how civic participation influences public health. Whether you voice concerns in community forums, contribute to public health surveys, or engage with local health initiatives, your involvement is a catalyst for change. Together, we can ensure that public health policies reflect our community's needs and aspirations.A recent analysis of civic engagement and state health outcomes from 1996 to 2020 showed that in states where people are more civically engaged and vote more, public health outcomes are better. (Source: Voting Restrictions and Public Health: An Analysis of State Variation )Did you know that Flourish & Thrive Labs specializes in helping with civic engagement? We recently led a community engagement effort to help understand barriers to participation in a local community. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gzR5AFDUImage source: NPHW

🌟 Celebrating 60 Years of Impact: The Legacy of Community Health Centers As I reflect on the remarkable journey of Community Health Centers over the past six decades, I'm reminded of their profound impact on the American healthcare ecosystem. Born out of the Civil Rights Movement and the War on Poverty, these centers were founded with a revolutionary idea: healthcare should be accessible to all, regardless of one's socio-economic status. From their humble beginnings in Mount Bayou, Mississippi, and Boston, Massachusetts, Community Health Centers have grown into the nation's largest and most successful primary care network, serving over 31 million individuals across the country. Their unwavering commitment to health equity and community empowerment has improved countless lives and reshaped our healthcare approach. These centers exemplify the power of community collaboration, bringing together healthcare professionals, community leaders, and government support to create a holistic healthcare ecosystem. They offer a wide array of services, from primary care to behavioral health, ensuring comprehensive care that extends beyond the traditional healthcare setting. As innovators and problem solvers, Community Health Centers have been at the forefront of addressing America's most pressing public health challenges, including natural disasters and pandemics. Their role in reducing health disparities, preventing illness, and addressing social determinants of health like nutrition, mental health, and homelessness is unparalleled. As we look to the future, it's important to advocate for long-term funding so that Community Health Centers can continue to advance their mission of providing quality, accessible healthcare to all. A new report recommends changes to Minnesota’s oversight of assisted living facilities to reflect the culturally specific needs of their communities. Led by researchers from CCAPS and the School of Public Health, the study identifies four key challenges faced by smaller, culturally specific providers, and offers recommendations to meet each challenge."There are thousands of smaller, culturally specific assisted living facilities across the US," says Rajean Moone, Ph.D. Moone, director of the University's Long Term Care Administration programs. "While specific to Minnesota, these findings and recommendations could have implications for other states that are pursuing similar efforts.” https://lnkd.in/e3wGawbp#assistedliving#culturalheritage#publichealth#ltc#ugrad#story#Minnesota#longtermcare#inclusivity#eldercare#umnresearch

Thank you to Maranda C. Ward, Ed.D, MPH for introducing me to National Public Health Week. For those of who may not know, National Public Health week is every first full week of April and is intended to recognize contributions made to Public Health as well as bringing attention to issues that can improve our nation's health. Each day of National Public Health Week focuses on a specific theme, with today being civic engagement. When taking a look at civic engagement we can see that it is crucial for positive public health outcomes among the nation. Studies indicate that communities with higher levels of civic engagement tend to experience better public health outcomes. Whether advocating for pedestrian-friendly sidewalks, advocating for more green spaces, or ensuring adequate funding for schools, our participation allows us to influence decisions that directly impact the quality of life in our communities.Given the importance of civic engagement, here are some ways you can contribute: - VOTE! And encourage your friends, colleagues, neighbors, family to do the same- Encourage your workplace to give employees time off to vote- Educate yourself and others about voting policies in your state to raise awareness.Let's work together to foster a culture of civic engagement for healthier communities. #NationalPublicHealthWeek #CivicEngagement
