If you follow me on Instagram you know I have an addiction to green smoothies. It all started with an innocent trip to Whole Foods one Saturday. The girls stayed home with Daddy which meant I was all alone in this magical place. No screaming for cookies, no knocking over expensive bottles of wine. The juice bar guy said the Green and Glowing Smoothie was their most popular green smoothie, so I tried it. I was blown away by just how good it was and my solo shopping trip was now perfect. It didn’t taste at all like greens or salad. It just tasted sweet and creamy. I quickly became a “regular” there and they knew what I was going to order. At this point I realized I better start making my green smoothies at home or I would soon be going broke.
My munchkins love this green smoothie too and I can’t think of an easier way to get a big serving of raw greens into their diets. If your kids are reluctant, it might help to give it a fun name like Tinker Bell Smoothie or Monster Smoothie.
Even my husband who initially said “yuck!” at the sight of my green smoothie changed his tune once he tried it. So if you haven’t gotten on the green smoothie bandwagon yet, try this sweet and mild one. I think you’ll be hooked.
Green Smoothie Recipe
printer friendly recipe
Makes 1 smoothie (or 2 kid sized)
1/2 cup vanilla almond, soy, or coconut milk (I use unsweetened vanilla almond milk)
1 cup frozen pineapple pieces
1 cup frozen mango chunks
1 big handful fresh baby spinach
Variations:
– add a small container of yogurt for added protein and calcium
– add a scoop of your favorite vanilla protein powder (I don’t do this for kids)
Add 1 tablespoon of any of the following:
– chia seeds
– flax seeds
– natural flaked coconut
– peanut or almond butter
Pour milk into a blender. Add pineapple, mango, and spinach. Cover with blender lid and blend to combine. If blender stops turning, add a little more milk. I like to add a couple of ice cubes to make the smoothie very cold and icy. The fruit makes this smoothie sweet, but if you would like it sweeter, add a dash of stevia.

I make virtually this exact smoothie at least twice a week, usually just adding yogurt too. So delicious. And my daughters totally love them. Definitely a delicious crowd pleaser!

My hubs gave me a Vitamix for Christmas so I am now a smoothie making machine! I generally just grab whatever I have and toss it in. I find, as long as you had a frozen banana, you always get a great smooth texture and sweet taste. I need to start stocking frozen mango too!! Obsessed!

Ok, I have to admit, smoothies, especially green ones, aren't in my repertoire, but if anyone can convince me to give one a try, it's you!

totally hooked on smoothies too.
do you happen to know how much fat is added by adding a tablespoon of chia seeds? i know the fiber is high so maybe it's worth it?
thanks for this!

Hi Michele, a Tablespoon of chia is 4 grams of fat. I wouldn't worry about it – it's filled with Omega 3 fatty acids which are SO good for you. Also chia fills you up so you won't be hungry later 🙂

Just returned from a trip for an early morning non-fat latte, and a stop at the grocery store for the ingredients to create this scrumptious sounding smoothie for lunch! I adore green veggies, just have never been able to accept the color in a smoothie…but you've inspired me! Then I will introduce my 4 year old grandson to it…who refuses to eat his veggies! Thanks, Marina!

This really looks appetizing and healthy. I didn't realize it was made of baby spinach. I never really liked this leaf. But I wanna try this one this weekend. I might love this, and so are the kids.

Just tried this smoothie! Thanks for sharing it – I'm not a fan of bananas at all and so many recipes use bananas for texture. This is right up my alley! I added chia seeds to mine and LOVED IT! This is now a staple for every day – probably going to replace my dinner and I'll drink it along side eating a salad! Thanks!

what type of blender do you have? I'm looking for one that will make great smoothies. The one I have doesn't blend frozen items well.
-
Marina D — March 12, 2013 @ 8:38 pm Reply
Hi! I use a Vitamix and it is absolutely amazing for blending ice and green very finely. You can also use it to make homemade peanut butter, soups, etc.

I even got a magic bullet for my birthday so that I can make green smoothies while I'm off at college. I love love love this!! I have a bag of spinach, 4 huge mangoes and one big ole pineapple at home right now that I wanted to try something different with it. After a quick Google search and a tap of the enter button,…VOILA…this yummilicious recipe popped up! I'm going home to cut up and freeze my pineapples and mango ASAP! Do you have to use almond milk, or can you use coconut water?

Hi Tonia, that's excellent!
Coconut water would be great. I make these a little differently every time and they're always delicious.

For those looking for an incredible blender on a student type budget: I just got a 550 watt black & decker for about $20 that pulverizes ice, frozen fruit, seeds, nuts etc like a champ! I may upgrade after graduation, but this should keep me in smoothies for at least its 2 year warranty! Great blog, btw, kudos!

With Chia seed is it better to make the gel and add it to smoothies or just dump the chia seed in?
