We often think of fancy coffee drinks as being more modern, something we associate with Starbucks and other big coffee chains. However, something I’ve noticed in vintage homemaking magazines and vintage cookbooks is they loved to make fun coffee drinks as well.
A lot of the recipes I’ve seen call for instant coffee which has been around since the 1700’s but started to look more like the instant coffee we know in the mid-century.
It’s interesting to me that recently, thanks to the TikTok whipped coffee trends, instant coffee is gaining popularity again. It may be time to bring back some of the vintage coffee recipes! Hint, hint I’m going to do just that so be sure you are signed up for my emails to be the first to know.
You can of course make coffee drink recipes at home using other forms of coffee as well. I love using my stovetop espresso maker for delicious coffees at home. Any coffee maker will usually do.
Making fancy coffee drink recipes at home is a great way to save money, get creative, and reduce waste. I started getting into making homemade coffee drinks several years ago. At the time we didn’t have any coffee shops in town and I wanted to be able to drink fancy coffee drinks.
I have mostly created frappes but I often enjoy making hot coffee drinks at home as well. It’s really fun to see what you can come up with.

Must-Have Coffee Drink Recipes Supplies
There are some supplies that are helpful to have when you want to start making fancy coffee drinks at home. You don’t need a huge espresso maker or anything terribly fancy but these items help a lot.
A blender is also a must for frappes. I just have a normal blender, you don’t need a fancy blender to make great frappes.
Don’t forget to use glass straws instead of plastic for your cold coffee drinks. They are great for hot drinks as well.
